Editorial standards
How I recommend.
The rules behind every pick on The Build Shelf.
The standard
Everything on this shelf has to earn its place by helping a founder or leader do a real job better: lead and learn, build the organization (THE BUILD LIST™), run the work, show up well, or get back to work. If I can't connect it to something you are actually doing, it doesn't go up.
What I promise
- No paid placements. No brand pays to be listed or ranked. I don't accept free products in exchange for coverage. If that ever changes for a specific item, it will be labeled on that item.
- Honest about experience. When a pick is something I personally used or watched, I say so, like Sound of Hope. Otherwise I tell you why a founder would want it, based on what it is and what it's for. I won't pretend to have tested what I haven't.
- No invented reviews. No fabricated testimonials, star ratings, or quotes. You'll see reasons, not hype.
- No prices on the page. Prices change constantly, so I send you to Amazon to see the current price and availability.
- Clear labels. Every affiliate link is marked and opens Amazon in a new tab. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Kept current. Guides show a last-updated date. If a product is discontinued or replaced, it gets updated or removed.
How a pick gets chosen
- Start with the job. What does this help a founder, coach, or job seeker do, and for whom?
- Check the substance. For books: is it widely used by practitioners and still in print? For tech and gear: is it a current model from an established maker, and does it solve a real founder problem (notes and follow-up, sound, light, posture, paperwork, the room) without overbuying?
- Find the cheaper answer. Where a budget option does the job, it's listed too.
- Write one action. Every pick includes one way to put it to work this week. If I can't write that sentence, it's not a pick.
